What is a statement piece?
A statement piece is a mineral large enough to carry a room on its own. Not something that sits on a shelf among other objects, but a piece that defines the spot where it stands — the way a sculpture or artwork does.
In practice that means amethyst druses and geodes from about forty centimetres, mounted on a tall metal base so the whole reaches eye level — amethyst on a stand that can carry a room. Weight quickly runs to ten kilos or more.
What sets these pieces apart is not size alone. It is the combination of an intact crystal field, a well-shaped rim and a mount that keeps the object upright and stable.
Where do you place such a piece?
Beside a seating area
The classic set-up: a freestanding geode next to an armchair or sofa, visible from several angles. Keep space around it — a statement piece needs air to work.
By a window
Daylight from the side makes the crystal tips glow and gives depth to the colour gradient. Avoid a spot in full midday sun: amethyst fades there over time.
Against a dark wall
Walnut, dark panelling or a deep paint colour give the purple far more strength than a white wall. Contrast does the work.
In an entrance or hallway
A geode is the first thing visitors see and sets the tone at once. Extra attention to stand stability matters here because of passing traffic.
Light makes the difference
Do not underestimate lighting. A crystal field that looks superb by day can read as a dark mass in the evening if no light falls on it.
A aimed spot from above or slightly from the front makes individual tips sparkle. Grazing light from the side emphasises the depth of the cavity. What to avoid is flat light straight on: all texture disappears.
Warm lighting (around 2700 kelvin) works better with purple than cold white light.
Weight, mounting and safety
A large piece on a tall stand has a high centre of gravity. The stands are designed for that with a heavy, wide base plate, but a few points matter:
- Level floor. On thick high-pile carpet the base can tip; put a thin hard board underneath if needed.
- Lift with two people. Hold the whole by the base and the underside of the stone, never by the crystals.
- Children and pets. Do not place a large piece in a walkway or next to a play area.
- Floor protection. On marble or parquet, felt pads under the base plate are wise.
Every lot lists exact height, width and weight, including the stand. Measure your intended spot beforehand: in photos these objects are systematically hard to judge.
